I bought a wireless 3-unit intercom system (not cheap) so that my parents could reach me no matter where I was throughout the house (one for mother, one for daddy, & one for me). The reception was not good, we couldn't understand what each other was saying. Then, I realized that my cordless AT&T home phones had the intercom feature, so now that's what we use. It's fantastic!! So you're better off putting your money towards new phones instead of an intercom system.
If you should decide to buy intercoms that are not wireless, be sure that the locations where you're going to plug them are all on the same wiring throughout your home, otherwise they won't work. I need wireless so that I can carry it wherever I go in the house, out in the garage, out in the yard, etc.
